Effient® (prasugrel) is an oral antiplatelet medicine. This means that Effient can help maintain your stent by keeping the platelets in your blood from sticking together and forming blood clots inside of it, and inside the arteries of your heart. Effient helps reduce the risk of a future heart-related event, such as a heart attack or blood clot in a stent, in patients who had an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) event that was treated with angioplasty.

Your doctor likely prescribed that you take Effient along with aspirin. Aspirin is also an antiplatelet medicine. But it works differently than prescription antiplatelet medicines like Effient.

Together, Effient and aspirin help keep platelets from sticking together and forming clots in your heart arteries or stent.

Antiplatelet medicines like Effient reduce the ability of blood to clot in your stent and heart arteries, which is a good thing. On the other hand, because your blood doesn't clot as well, antiplatelet medicines can also increase the risk of bleeding. Bleeding is the most common side effect of Effient. Some bleeding can be life threatening and even fatal. See the Safety and Side Effects section to learn more about the safety profile of Effient.

Taking Effient.

If your doctor prescribed Effient, you should continue taking your Effient as directed by your doctor. Effient is not available as a generic. It is also important to get your refills on time so you do not run out of medicine.

How should I take Effient?

  • Take Effient one time each day
  • You can take Effient with or without food
  • Take Effient with aspirin as instructed by your doctor
  • Your doctor will decide how long you should take Effient. Do not stop taking Effient without first talking to the doctor who prescribed it for you
  • If you miss a dose, take Effient as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Just take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time unless your doctor tells you to
  • If you take too much Effient, call your local emergency room or poison control center right away
  • Call your doctor or healthcare provider right away if you fall or injure yourself, especially if you hit your head. Your doctor or healthcare provider may need to check you

How should I store Effient?
